No fakes please...

Following the recent press coverage regarding copies of designer items being sold online, The Clothes Agency felt it was important the community understands the policy on this sensitive subject.

The protection of all members is so important - not only must each buyer be able to feel confident in their purchasing, but members who are selling responsibly should also be afforded the same security in that there is minimum risk to selling reputations.

For both buyers and sellers there are some basic steps that can be taken to ensure the avoidance of disappointment.

Buyers:

Just Ask! If you see an item you're interested in, it's high-end designer and you wish to make absolutely sure that it's genuine, then don't be afraid to use the Ask The Seller A Question facility at the bottom of each listing. This will start a conversation between you and the seller - and all your messages will be stored within the my messages section of member's accounts, (these can be referred to at any time.)

You could request further proof, i.e. closer photographic evidence of the label; where it was purchased; or perhaps a receipt. The authenticity card is essential and in the case of handbags, the original dustbag and any accompanying documentation should be present.

Finally, it is a wise option to ask for a money-back guarantee if the item proves to be other than described.

Sellers who are listing genuinely and responsibly will be glad to answer any enquiries. They're as conscious as you are when it comes to the unfortunate experiences of many buyers elsewhere on the Internet, and will be anxious to assure you their products are genuine. If they are not willing to provide this information, then it would be wise to exercise caution when buying.

Sellers:

In order to authenticate your items, place as much information as possible in the listing. Where the item was purchased, how long ago, till receipts, photographic evidence of hallmarks, stamps, logos, linings, engravings. If you can show it - do so!

Offer a money-back guarantee, it goes a long way to establishing confidence.

If it is not the genuine article, then please don't claim it to be. It will only result in the possibility of your listing being removed from sale without any refund of listing fees, the return of the item and possible exclusion from the community.

If you're not entirely sure if something is authentic - then it would be sensible to check it carefully before advertising it on The Clothes Agency.

So, what IS the actual policy regarding copies?

The Clothes Agency's policy regarding the authenticity of designer items can be found within the following sections: Terms & Conditions; Help - Selling TipsFAQs  - Buyer's Questions Answered - but to save time, here it is in a nutshell..

Under NO circumstances should any item be displayed as genuine that is not entirely authentic.
Hermes bagsFor instance, if a bag looks like a designer piece, it's vital that the seller does not claim it to be a 'copy'. "Exactly like a Prada - you can't tell the difference - it has all the stamps and markings" will not do - it is fraudulent and there is a zero tolerance policy at The Clothes Agency. Other classic examples of mistaken identity may be Hermes, GucciLouis Vuitton or Chanel.

The subject of 'fakes' could not be more sensitive and The Clothes Agency hopes that for those who continue to behave in the kind and trusting spirit of the community, this will merely lend warm assurance that we care.
However, sellers who do try to sell outside these guidelines will be individually cautioned and listings removed without refund!

And now for some really good news that will help both buyers and sellers...
