Oscars 2009 silver screen beauties in monochrome

Last year it was all reds on the red carpet, but this year all shades of silver and pale grey, yes grey, plus monochrome white and black were the most popular colours. Some got away with, some didn't and some just went totally over the top in other ways.

Love it or hate it (the dress that is), first place has to go to our very own Kate Winslet (left), not just for winning Best Actress, but also for looking resplendant in a one-shoulder dark grey satin dress by YSL. We love her curves and so did the dress. Bravo Kate! You are now officially our best-loved national treasure, we don't even mind if you want to cry a bit.

Kate Winslet Penelope Cruz  Taraji Henson
I'm a huge fan of Penelope Cruz (centre) who always looks wonderful, seen here in white vintage Balmain. Beautiful and only a little like a wedding dress. Supporting actress nominee Taraji P Henson of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button wore a voluminous strapless white gown. Others who chose white this year included Marisa Tomei in Versace, Jessica Biel in Prada satin, Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive and Melissa George. Angelina Jolie looked amazing in black, though rather severe and a tad predictable (but when you look like Angelina you can wear anything you like).

And there are plenty of ravishing gowns right here to help you to look and feel like the Ultimate Movie Star - have a look at the evening section to find that glamorous treasure...

Meryl Streep  Sophia Loren Miley Cyrus
And my least favourite - Meryl Streep seen here (left) in ghastly grey - Meryl you looked happier in your dungarees in Mamma Mia - I feel really guilty being so rude about an icon like Meryl. But not as guilty as for criticising Sophia 'Who brought the wedding cake' Loren. Sophia (centre) looks amazing for her age but the dress is just too fussy and flouncy.

And finally the gorgeous, telented and ever-so-young Miley Cyrus (right) in a Zuhair Murad original that everyone thinks is totally over the top and has even been described as the worst fashion Oscar of the year. But hey, if you can't get away with it at 16 years old, when can you?

Anyone would think the Oscars was just about the fashion. Of course not. There were lots of winners other than best and worst dressed.

Here are just some of the main ones:
